When connected with FTP you will be navigated into your home directory which is NOT your default web site directory. You will have to choose a subdirectory corresponding to your site name - this is where you have to upload web content. Depending on location of your web site you may or may not see subdirectories of your other web sites in the root directory - this is normal.
Default documents are: Index.htm, Index.html, Default.asp, Default.aspx - in order of precedence.
It may take up to 4 hours before you will be able to use the name of your site (DNS replication delay). Meanwhile you can use IP address (as the Host name) with a FTP client to upload the files.
