Hearing aids - no sound?

Why my hearing aid has no sound? This question would come to a hearing aid user who has worn a hearing aid for a few months. First thought would be because the hearing aid is faulty.

Among the causes of a non functioning hearing aid is the earmold. In the picture above the patient could not hear because the earmold is blocked with wax. Even though it may seem just a little bit of wax in the sound bore or tubing, sound completely cannot pass through the wax. Other materials can also completely obstruct such as dirt sometimes even a drop of sweat. When a person is working hard and sweating, water vapor may condense within the sound tube. This little droplets can combine and complete block the sound tube and the patient cannot hear any sounds coming from his or her hearing aid.

Cleaning the earmold is easy and can be done at home.

Firstly remove the earmold from the Hearing Aid to ensure the hearing aid is not exposed to water. We need to soal the earmold in solutions to disinfect from germs.

After soaking for 15-30 mins, wash the earmold in clean running water. Run water through the tubing to check if the tubing is blocked.

Then wipe the earmold clean and dry. Also use an air syringe or puffer to clear any remaining water or moisture within the earmold tubing.

Once properly dry, insert the tubing of the earmold into the tonehook of the hearing aid. You should hear the clear sounds from your hearing aids again

Food for your Ears.

I'd like to start of to say that I'm inspired by a university friend who has just (12 FEB 2014) published a new book - Lite Malaysian Favourites by Goo Chui Hoong. She has also written another book entitled Food for your Eyes which co-authored with her husband who is an eye specialist. Am proud of her achievements and am taking a step to look into foods for better hearing.
Here are some suggestions on food which may help you maintain good hearing.

Kale: this trendy new superfood is unnoticeable in a smoothie, and adds antioxidants to the mix.
Yogurt: contains potassiumand magnesium, which has been linked to prevent noise-induced hearing loss by eliminating free radicals caused by loud noises. Free radicals are unstable atoms that are highly reactive and do damage to the body.
Bananas: rich inmagnesium and also potassium, which is essential in maintaining your body fluids, particularly the fluid in your inner ear.
Mango: a tasty way to get a dose of over 20 vitamins and minerals in a single fruit.

Every year in the month of May, Malaysia celebrates better hearing and speech month. Hearing awareness programs will be organized as well as workshops and talks to ensure better hearing and speech is available to all.

Bacteria-caused middle ear infections mystery solved.

Dr Thornton and her team discovered that sticky nets of DNA hide the bacteria in the ears of kids with recurrent middle-ear infections, and evade antibiotic treatment by creating impenetrable slimy biofilms. The researchers are targeting these nets with a drug that has already proven its ability to help kids with cystic fibrosis by breaking up thick secretions in their lungs.

A study on the DNA net discovery was published in the online science journal Plos One in February and clinical drug trials are now underway. "Bacteria in the ear hide in a sticky glue made up of big nets of DNA from the children's own immune system," Dr Thornton said. "It is similar to what happens in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis, where a treatment known as Dornase alfa is used to break up this sticky DNA." "We are now trialling this treatment in the ears of children when they have grommets inserted. We believe this could get rid of these bacteria and stop children getting more infections and needing more ear surgery."

Imaging printing your own ears.

The human ear is something we often take for granted. Some have big ears, some have small ears. Some show off their ears, some hide their ears. some have no ears. But that would change with the advancement in printing technology. We were amazed when we could print instead of just write. Then colour printers came along. So we were awed by the depth of colours that can be replicated on the colour laser. Some even went as far as trying to print counterfeit notes. Then came 3D printing. We could print just about anything we can imagine. A chair, a table, a computer part, a gear. But the trophy today goes to the team at Cornell University who came up with the idea of printing ears and they did it.

Congratulations to the Cornell University team on their innovation to help people get their ears printed. Not just on plastic but with real cells.

Quota International helps two children and their families pay for hearing aids

WOOSTER -- Sitting in the classroom and listening clearly to what a teacher is saying is one of the most important keys to a student's success. So when that is jeopardized by the child's inability to hear clearly, accomplishments are harder to earn.

Such was the case for 7-year-old Travis Roe and 6-year-old Kenzie Beckler, until their parents heard of the help available from the cooperative effort of Quota International and Siemens Hearing Instruments.

Travis wasn't passing his hearing exams when an audiologist diagnosed him with mild hearing loss, which doctors are unsure how he developed. After he was written a prescription for hearing aids for both ears, his parents, Rachel and William Roe, learned their Medicaid provider would not pay for them. They were referred by doctors to the Wooster Quota Club's "Sound Beginnings" program, which provides vouchers for hearing aids for children 18 and under.

The hearing aids Travis now has have made a huge improvement for him, his mom said, making it possible for the Orrville first-grader to enjoy learning.
